There is a big absence in the story of Abraham and Isaac, in which God asks Abraham, as a proof of his devotion, to sacrifice his only (and long awaited) son, Isaac: Sarah, Isaac’s mother. She is entirely absent from the bible story… For those who don’t know the story, an angel of God intervenes just as Abraham is about to cut his son’s throat and substitute a ram to Isaac explaining that God just wanted to test Abraham’s faith. It is this final episode that Caravaggio represented.

Using Caravaggio’s depiction of Isaac’s sacrifice, I introduce Sarah, the old mother who after years of waiting gets to bear a son to see him at a mercy of a capricious God.
